Academic Learning Center
Fall 2009 -Welcome, Argosy Faculty and Students!
The Academic Learning Center looks forward to meeting those of you who are new, seeing our old friends and welcoming ongoing Argosy students with whom we have not yet worked. Last year we saw more than 200 students, presented six APA Style Workshops, and visited a variety of classes to represent our breadth of services for students and faculty.
This summer--or what we have been calling summer--we spent working with Argosy students on a variety of projects. Some of the students we consult with elect “packages” of sessions, for example, four visits to focus on organization. The ALC is a laboratory and collaborative in nature. What we do in our sessions reflects what you, as students, let us know is important to you. Sometimes a very fruitful session takes the form of a discussion in which you tell us about your research interests and we help you to develop, focus, or synthesize them. Fascinating conversations ensue.
For those of you who feel you have been outside of academe and forgotten formal writing conventions, we can help you revise writing into scholarly language, as well as support you in decoding APA Style. This is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where you can work out strategies to manage whatever obstacles your coursework presents. Please come in and see what the ALC has to offer!
Happy Fall Session!

ALC News: Fall 2008
Hi, I am Dr. Anne Flanagan. I am the new Senior Writing Specialist at Argosy/Chicago’s Academic Learning Center. My doctorate in English specialized in theories about the writing process and I have an extensive background working with second language writers. I am interested in World and Multi-Ethnic American literatures and will be teaching these in courses here at Argosy, along with lots of writing courses.
Along with the new and glorious vistas at our Michigan address, the ALC space also has been upgraded. We have eight computer stations attached to a printer, four cubicles—two with desks and two with tables and chairs for more than two people, and a grand view of Michigan Avenue facing west. Right outside our doors are two new study rooms with doors that can accommodate small groups.
Remember, you don’t need to have a finished project to use the Academic Learning Center. Come in to brainstorm with a tutor on a writing assignment and you will go home with a clearer direction for what you write on your own. Consider forming study/thesis/dissertation groups to support your progress to degree; you can use our ALC space to meet. The ALC is student-centered, friendly and waiting to hear from you.
Come in, check out our new space and say hello!
